Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol AddictionAlcohol addiction is a disease of the brain that is caused from the intoxicating liquids that include hard liquors, beer, malt beverages, wine and other alcoholic drinks. The compulsive need for one to consume makes them an addict. They can’t live a normal life or function properly unless they have consumed a certain amount in a certain time frame, usually an alcohol addict will drink some form of alcohol all day every day.  Alcohol addiction is serious, and not to be taken lightly.

When a person craves the alcohol and cannot control their limit or control the drinking period makes them a perfect candidate for alcoholism. Alcohol has an effect on the way the brain responds. A severe alcoholic will crave alcohol more than they crave food.

Some of the more common symptoms of an addict include the cravings or the strong urge to drink some form of alcohol. Having little or no control to stop the drinking is another common sign. The tolerance level is at a higher rate as more alcohol is needed to feel the effects of the drug.

The withdrawal symptoms of an alcohol addict can be severe as they experience nausea, shakiness, sweating and anxiety.

Having the will power to stop drinking may or may not work with being an alcohol addict as almost every alcoholic needs some kind of assistance with the disease. This is a powerful disease that affects every part of the body.

Alcohol addiction can cause severe issues in one’s life as it can progress to crime, suicides, destroy brain cells, lead to heart disease, cause cancer, high blood pressure, other heart damage, lack of oxygen leading to blackouts and can cause death.

A big portion of the alcohol that is consumed is broken down into the liver meaning the more alcohol that is consumed the harder the liver has to work. The liver is meant to fight off certain things and has a fixed rate at breaking it down and when more than enough alcohol travels down to the liver it can cause malfunctions and other serious diseases.

Overcoming the alcohol addiction can be a long road as the addiction needs intensified treatment. The first step as in with all addictions is to admit there is a problem and that alcohol has taken over. Getting sober is another start to recovering from the disease. There are alcohol rehab centers and drug rehabilitation programs that specialize with the disease. Certain recovery programs such as 12 step procedures are a good start as well. Counseling is an important element to seeking out the help that is needed. Medications may be provided as well if the need is there. Most importantly having the support of loved ones around will help with the process and get the progression going for a faster recovery.
